📖 What is an International Driver’s Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is valid in all countries that signed the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic and is also recognized in many other countries that are not signatories. In some places, you may be required to have an IDP to drive legally. Most international car rental agencies will ask for it before renting you a vehicle.
The Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (November 8th, 1968), amended in 2006, requires the IDP to contain additional identifiable information about the holder. This helps law enforcement officers in emergencies or any issue that may occur while driving abroad.
The IDP is useful for many purposes such as:
- Car rental
- Dealing with local driving authorities for identification
- Vehicle registration
- Insurance proposals
🌐 IDP Features & Languages
The International Driving Permit translates your local license into 9 major languages: English, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, German, Spanish, and French.
Additionally, it comes with a plastic identity card that translates your local license into 22 languages electronically, making it easier to communicate with authorities worldwide.
IDP is a legal requirement to drive or rent a car in foreign countries
